"Wishing You Were Here"
I wrote this song when I was down on the Hawkesbury River.
When I was younger, I lost someone very close to me through quite painful circumstances. It took me 15 years to finally ask my mum what had happened and how it happened. Until that point, I had never really spoken about it.
3 years later, I wrote "Wishing You Were Here".
I was born and spent my younger years in Townsville, which I have so many fond memories of. We were always by the water, fishing, swimming and playing etc...
When I was on the Hawkesbury, I had all these fond feelings and memories come up again. Though this time it wasn't painful or bad, it was more a feeling of acceptance and letting go - in a positive way being able to move on once and for all.
Wishing You Were Here - lyrics
It's cold out here tonight.
I'm sitting on the jetty, listening to the train cross the river.
There's so many things on my mind.
I've made it so complicated, it's time to make it simple.
And I wish that you were here.
And I wish that you were here.
The boats rocking on the water.
Venus is rising high, the tide is coming in closer.
I've sat in silence for so long.
I've sung you a million songs,if only I could let you go.
And I wish that you were here.
And I wish that you were here.
By the time I realised,
I knew it was too late.
Wishing you were here.
Wishing you were here.
Wishing you were here,
to love me.
Feeling of sand under my toes, the sea will always be my home.
The water she soothes me.
There's rain on my face and the tears fall hard,
if I let you go now, then who'll cover me?
And I wish that you were here.
By the time I realised,
I knew it was too late.
Wishing you were here.
Wishing you were here.
Wishing you were here,
to love me,
to hold me,
to tell me why.
"Beautiful Day"
"Beautiful Day" came out when I had a girlfriend move back to Cairns with her boyfriend, who at the time was heavily involved in drugs. It not only saddened me how he was affecting his own life, but also how he was affecting hers. He was a good hearted man with a heavy problem and she had become a different person and was miserable because of it.
"Beautiful Day" is about life sometimes being really, really tough. You have to keep going no matter how much it hurts; there will always be another Beautiful Day even if it doesn't feel like it at the time. J
Beautiful Day-lyrics
She took a train back home to Cairns,
decided she was going to start again, her man in tow.
He was smart, he was funny, he was really sweet and they dreamed
a dream but there was just one thing, he was addicted.
When you gonna realize that he won?t change and if you want a
better life then your going to have to make it
through the night and through the heart ache, but I promise you
that you?ll see another, Beautiful Day, Beautiful Day.
Why when I call her on a Sunday night is she sitting there right by
his side, unable to speak?
She's not herself she's pretending to be but I can hear beyond that
fragile laughing, her heart grieving.
When you gonna realize that he won?t change and if you want a
better life then your going to have to make it
through the night and through the heart ache, but I promise you
that you?ll see another, Beautiful Day, Beautiful Day.
So I guess you thought you had nothing to lose now there's a
stifled sound from the muse, there's no more singing.
You're smart, you're funny and you're really sweet
you can learn to dream your own damn dream, a butterfly beginning.
When you gonna realize that he won't change and if you want a
better life then your going to have to make it
through the night and through the heart ache, but I promise you
that you'll see another, Beautiful Day, Beautiful Day.
"Heart Don't Ache"
I wrote this song while I was driving from Noosa. Oddly enough, I tend to write quite a lot of my songs whilst driving. I also judge most albums on there "cruising" ability. Simply "heart don't ache" is about feeling good about life. No more heart aches of any kind (past love, money, or life's general ups and downs). It's a song about the freedom you feel when you're in love with people and with life itself, living one day at a time. J
My Heart Don't Ache - lyrics
My heart don't ache anymore.
My heart don't ache with new love to adore.
My heart don't ache from the past mistakes.
My heart don't ache anymore.
I can see a brighter new way.
I can see a brighter new day.
I can see the sun, high up, up above.
Sun kisses are warming me.
My heart don't ache anymore.
My heart don't ache with new love to adore.
My heart don't ache from the past mistakes.
My heart don't ache anymore.
One step ahead and don't look back.
One step ahead one day is where it's at.
One step ahead at a time.
One step ahead and peace you'll find.
My heart don't ache anymore.
My heart don't ache with new love to adore.
My heart don't ache from the past mistakes.
My heart don't ache anymore.
"Like a Man"
"Like a man" was written light heartedly about a man who could not commit.
Like a Man - lyrics
Don't look at me like you don't know what I'm saying.
Don't look at me like you can't feel what I'm talking about.
Don't look at me like you haven't seen my face,
every single day for the last 13 years.
Don't walk away from me like you don't respect me.
Don't walk away like you can't be bothered with me.
Don't walk away cos you don't know the answer.
Only walk away if you can't take it like a man.
Don't be teasing me like you think that that you can play me.
Don't shout at me like I'm some kind of fool.
Don't take that tone and don't you take that manner.
Don't push me like it don't hurt and don't shove me like it don't matter.
Don't be telling me that you can't handle this.
Don't be telling me that your doing all you can.
Don't be telling me that you'd rather do it solo cos that's just a lie
are you gonna take the easy road or are you gonna stand like a man?
"Boxing Ring"
I wrote this song about the boys out there who have been in a scuffle or two (including my husband!) and who enjoy a night out. There have been a few times I have found myself watching (in horror) or jumping in trying to stop fights at gigs! I have to ask was it my singing that drove them to blue or the booze? J
Boxing Ring - lyrics
You came to the bar to watch me sing.
You came to the bar and acted like it was a boxing ring.
Baby grab your beer and get the hell out of here,
Don't be making me come down there.
If you want good lovin' then don't you go shovin' and pickin' fights round here.
Did you want sweet love when you get home?
Did you want sweet love or are you too stoned?
If you won't behave, I'll put you in a cage and I'll keep you under lock and key.
Forget the ball and chain you gotta be tamed honey by me.
You came to the bar to watch me sing.
You came to the bar and acted like it was a boxing ring.
Baby grab your beer and get the hell out of here,
Don't be making me come down there.
If you want good lovin' then don't you go shovin' and pickin' fights round here.
I'll fit you snug like a boxing glove.
I'll fit you snug with all my good love.
Get home tonight I don't want to hear about any more fighting.
It's embarrassing me when I have to jump in and it's not very lady like.
You came to the bar to watch me sing.
You came to the bar and acted like it was a boxing ring.
Baby grab your beer and get the hell out of here,
Don't be making me come down there.
If you want good lovin' then don't you go shovin' and pickin' fights round here.
"Busking for Love No2."
Yes, there is a No 1. Busking for Love. Number one was about singing to gain someone's love; number 2 is about having to constantly encourage someone to show love.
Busking for love No.2 - lyrics
Turn the light off I don't want to see your heart breaking.
Turn the fan on, I don't want to hear my muffled cry.
I want I love you to have more meaning,
But something's come over me I've lost all my feeling.
I'm tired of busking for your love, love, love love.
I'm so tired of busking for your love, love, love, love.
What will it take to make you to love me?
What will it take to make you to show me?
I grow tired of this but I?ll never grow tired of you.
Committed 100% is everything that I give to you.
With every essence of my being,
I just don?t want to stand here anymore fighting.
I'm tired of busking for your love, love, love love.
I'm so tired of busking for your love, love, love, love.
What will it take to make you to love me?
What will it take to make you to show me?
What will it take to make you to love me?
What will it take to make you to show me?
I'm tired of busking for your love, love, love love.
I'm so tired of busking for your love, love, love, love.
What will it take to make you to love me?
What will it take to make you to show me?
Turn the light off I don't want to see your heart aching.
Turn the fan on I don't want to hear my muffled cry.
"Reinvent the wheel"
"Reinvent the wheel" was written by the gifted Lee Fielding, a true songwriting talent. He has a style all of his own and his lyrics are colorfully crafted. I was so happy when Lee said I could use this song on the album it felt like the missing piece I was after.
Reinvent the wheel - lyrics (written by Lee Fielding)
Grandstand lovers
Got a stay of grace
They're trying to break free of here
Make it to a better place
They're goin' to California
In the summer time
Got a cheap flat
Rented out in Anaheim
He carries the duffle bag
till the drugs start kicking in
She carries conviction
And for a long time carried him
If she gets to the big show
With the bright lights and all
He'll be there in the front row
He'll be there if she falls
Put it all on black babe
Let's make a deal
Put it all on black babe, lady luck might be real
He's on side to borrow beg and steal
So she can try to reinvent the wheel
The money bag shows
How the land lies
The night seemed young
Up until the sunrise
Underneath the Hollywood sign
They agreed...
Wrote their names in blood
And she whispered "marry me... marry me"
He carries the duffle bag
Gotta get her downtown on time
She carries a fire in her
Gotta feeling they'll be fine
If she gets to the big show
With the bright lights and all
He'll be there in the front row
He'll be there if she falls
Put it all on black babe
Let's make a deal
Put it all on black babe, lady luck might be real
He's on side to borrow beg and steal
So she can try to reinvent the wheel
"Need You Here"
I wrote "Need You Here" many, many moons ago as an affirmation that I would find someone who I would play this scene out with. Thankfully, it worked and I met my true love.... after all, love is all that really matters.
Need You Here - lyrics
The light is fading quickly
It's alright I heard you the first time, but honey the snow is settling.
It's getting cold, don't you think we should be getting on home?
There's no such thing as loving me too much.
How do you measure love anyway?
You say you could fill galaxies with the love you have for me.
That's sweet and I love your honest heart.
I need you here.
By my side,
Always near.
You make me feel so alive,
And with love through my veins,
Life doesn't seem so strange.
From my heart with no fear,
I need you here.
I love this time of year.
The silence that fills the air,
The smell of the wood fires burning.
I feel so full of life.
It's so easy to breathe when you are here.
I was afraid of love, afraid that it would change me.
I never once considered it would be for the better.
But you're different to all I've met, your words are actually honest.
I need you here.
By my side,
Always near.
You make me feel so alive,
And with love through my veins,
Life doesn't seem so strange.
From my heart with no fear,
I need you here.
"Songbird"
I experienced one of the lowest points in my life and the lowest point of my career when I was trapped in a recoding/publishing agreement. I was locked in for five years and for five years the person I was tied to did nothing for me or my career. At the end, he said "it was just an experiment". God I wish he experimented with his career and not mine!
Even on a personal level, I have never been treated so appallingly in my entire life. I saw what money (millions) did to people and I loathed it.
To make things worse he would not let me out of the deals unless I paid back the money he wasted on really bad demo recordings, flying people up to record (instead of using locals), eating at my expense and the list goes on. To add insult to injury, he even added the bills for the coffee's and food that we went out for to talk about music and the deal he wanted to give me. He is worth $20 million dollars and rates as one of Australia's richest and he asked for money back?
Note to self - never be greedy.....
I was crushed. I had put everything into my "dream break" and every ounce of faith. By the end there was nothing left of me. I had no money, no career, and no desire to sing. Something dark had crawled inside my chest and wouldn't move. I was bitter and so broken. Worse - my faith in people, life, and the universal way of things was broken. I had lost my love of music. Music had fed my soul for so long and in my darkest moments had always kept me company. Now in one of my darkest moments I had no desire to sing or speak about music or listen to music. What could be worse than my connection with the Universe/ Spirit/ God (whatever you want to call it) being destroyed?
The Dali Lama on his recent tour to Australia was asked how you forgive someone who has done terrible things. In response, he said to separate the action from the person. He himself loathes what the Chinese are doing to his country, however, the Chinese people themselves he likes. A wise man.J
Time passed....I forgave and I took responsibility.
I gave thanks that what had happened has led me to this point in my life. I can even remember some of the times we had that we got along.
Time has healed wounds. Most important of all - my faith in life, people and the universal way of things have been restored.
This songbird is ready to sing again.
We had the first lot of rain since god knows when while recording this so I decided to add the rain to the track as it summed up my mood beautifully. The rain was so soothing and gentle.
Songbird-lyrics
All those lonely nights.
All those horrid fights.
Left me broken, so broken and feeling used.
The weight of expectation brings me down.
And forgiving you just doesn't seem like fair ground.
God?
...if you're really out there?
This songbird's heart needs a little mending.
I know people will talk.
They can say what they want to, I trusted you.
You broke me, you broke me in two.
The weight of expectation brings me down.
And forgiving you just doesn't seem like fair ground.
God?
...if you're really out there?
This songbird's heart needs a little mending.
Sometimes I feel like he stole a dream.
Looking back, he was never sincere.
There's no place here for the ruthless and the unkind.
God?
...if you're really out there?
This songbird's heart needs a little mending.
God?
...if you're really listening?
This songbird wants to sing again.
Wants to sing again.
Wants to sing...
This little songbird.
