Brace yourself: Dynamic Brisbane songstress Christy Kilpatrick is set to release her self-titled debut album. But you have a little time to run a background check first, so you can claim you knew her all along.
A gifted storyteller with a passion for pure, unpretentious melodies, Christy Kilpatrick unveils the beauty of everyday experiences through song. Walking the line between alternative-folk and country- roots, she melds infectious harmonies with a spirited exploration of life, love and things that go bump in the night.
Christy's album is a collection of songs that are immediately accessible and contagious, in an engaging, worldly sense. Whether celebrating simple light-hearted moments or delving through oceans of pain for meaning and direction, she exposes a thread of raw, honest emotion that can be universally understood. The result is an elegant, stimulating journey - an inspired fusion of sweet and sour.
Christy's soothing vocals and soaring country-tinged arrangements invite comparisons with the likes of Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, Sarah McLauchlan, and Sheryl Crow. Her album is the soundtrack to a dusk road trip adventure - chasing a warm Spring sunset through grassy, winding dirt roads - with the windows down. Maybe not in a ute though.
Perhaps this is a product of Christy's commuting between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast during the gestation of this record - performing residencies at established Noosa and hinterland venues, amid regular shows at key Brisbane venues.
Kilpatrick assembled an eviable ensemble to perform on this stunning debut, borrowing the likes of Lee Fielding, Ben McCarthy and Pete Williamson (from Pete Murray's band The Stonemasons), Tim Webb and Dave Sanders (Acre), Gleny Rae and Mal Winkle. With a music degree from the Queensland Conservatorium, Kilpatrick is no slouch on the instruments herself - but making a record is so much more fun with a posse. And the richness of that vibe comes through in the finished product.
Recorded at Rockinghorse Studios in the Byron Bay hinterland guided by the magic ears of Anthony Lycenko and at GTO in Brisbane by herself and Lee Fielding, you can expect Christy Kilpatrick's debut album is a hot release to get your hands on.
